In 1918, Gandhiji, in Hindi Sahitya Sammelan, had called Hindi as the language of the people and made it a national language.- On September 14, 1949, the Constituent Assembly decided with one vote that Hindi will be the official language of India. Because of this decision, this day is celebrated as Hindi Day in the whole of India.

- The first Prime Minister of the country, Jawaharlal Nehru, said that Hindi Day should be observed every year on 14 September, given the importance of this day. The first Hindi day in India was celebrated on 14 September 1953.
- On 26 January 1965, a resolution was passed in the Parliament that Hindi would be used in all government functions, but at the same time English would also be used as a co-official language.
- The Language Amendment Bill was introduced in Parliament in 1967. After this, English was made compulsory and English became the second official language after Hindi.
- On the day of Hindi in government departments many competitions are organized in which everyone participates.
- Many programs are also organized in schools on Hindi Day. Students are taught to respect Hindi and use Hindi in daily practice. There are also competitions on essay writing, debate etc.
- Bhasha Samman has been introduced by the government to motivate people towards Hindi. This honor is given annually to such a person of the country, who has made a special contribution to the use and upliftment of Hindi language among the people
