January 28 is celebrated as Data Privacy Day (DPD) across the world every year. The objective of the day is to sensitize individuals and disseminate privacy practices and principles. From being a privacy professional to an internet user or a consumer, the onus of safeguarding privacy lies on every shoulder. Data Privacy Day began in the United States and Canada in January, 2008 as an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe. Data Protection Day commemorates the Jan. 28, 1981, signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection. Data Privacy Day is observed annually on Jan. 28. On Jan. 27, 2014, the 113th U.S. Congress adopted S. Res. 337, a non-binding resolution expressing support for the designation of Jan. 28 as “National Data Privacy Day.”

This is an initiative to raise the awareness among businesses and users about protecting the privacy of their personal information online, and promote internet usage adicates. Data Privacy Day encourages events that spur technology which can provide control over personally identifiable information and compliance with privacy laws and regulations. This year, 28 January is a very special day, not only for the Council of Europe, but for the entire global Data Protection community, and above all, for each and every individual protected by this essential right.This year, 28 January is the 40th Anniversary of Convention 108, which was open for signature on 28 January 1981. It is also the 15th edition of Data Protection Day.
For 40 years, Convention 108 has influenced and shaped the protection of privacy and of data protection in Europe and beyond. Its modernised version (known as Convention 108+) will continue to do so.
