Since the festival is a celebration of prosperity, it also gives importance to the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. The rituals are performed mostly in the evening at the house of worship. Some people also traditionally worship Dhanvantari, the Hindu god of medicine and health. It is believed that he welcomes the family in good health and well being. On the day of Dhanteras, people decorate their houses with colored lights and other decorative items. Many also give their house a new paint. The entrance of the house is decorated with Rangoli to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Oil lamps are also lit at the entrance to welcome Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanvantari.

The importance of Dhanteras mainly lies in its auspiciousness for making new purchases. It is believed that any shopping on Dhanteras is considered a symbol of prosperity and wealth. The festival has religious significance as the rituals performed are related to Hindu goddesses and mythology. It is also an auspicious time to start new business ventures and make new investments.

Apart from religious significance, the festival also has an affordable price. This is the peak time of the year for markets to trade. The market becomes so active that they remain open 24/7 till the day of Diwali. Transactions amounting to hundreds of billions are recorded, which is actually a good sign for the country’s economy. Every area benefits from the festival shopping potential, be it small unorganized areas such as articles of decoration, lights, utensils, etc. or organized areas such as automobiles and jewelry.

Dhanteras is a major Hindu festival and holds great importance in the overall Diwali celebrations. The main festival of Diwali is incomplete without Dhanteras. It is a rich and happy start to one of the most important festivals in India. The rituals of celebrating Dhanteras may vary from state to state, but at its core is a celebration of prosperity and health.
