Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2021: Why do we observe Non-Resident Indian Day on Jan 9 every year?

January 9th is celebrated as Pravasi Bharatiya Divas every year to highlight the contribution of overseas diaspora in the development of the nation.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is observed on January 9th every year to mark the contribution of the Overseas Indian community in the development of India. On this day in 1915, Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest Pravasi, returned to India from South Africa, which led India’s freedom struggle and changed the lives of Indians forever. Therefore, January 9 was selected as the day to celebrate this occasion.

In order to connect India with vast overseas diaspora and bring their knowledge, expertise and skills on a common platform, the PBD Convention – the flagship event of MOIA is organized from January 7th-9th every year since 2003.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2021 history

Since 2003, PBD conventions are being held every year. Its format was revised in 2015 to celebrate the PBD once every two years and also to hold theme-based PBD Conferences during the interim period with participation from overseas diaspora experts, policymakers and stakeholders.

These conventions serve as a platform for the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and people of their ancestral land for mutually beneficial activities. These conventions are a means of networking for the overseas Indian community residing in various parts of the world for allowing them to share their experiences in various fields.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2021 theme

This year, the theme of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is “Contributing to Aatmanirbhar Bharat”. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas event will be held virtually amid the coronavirus pandemic. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2021 Convention will consist of three segments and will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
